EP Review: Lia Nxieta – Soul Scapes

Lia Nxieta is a Zurich, Switzerland-based alternative pop and R&B artist who I first discovered last autumn through her sultry track and video Good Boy. Since then, she’s been working on her debut EP, which was recently released. Consisting of four tracks that show the different sides of her sound, it’s called Soul Scapes.

Not only does the EP showcase Lia’s sound, but a lot of herself too. The name comes from the idea that she is exploring different corners of her soul through each track, and as a result the feeling of the EP is quite introspective.

Opening track Birthday Wishes starts with a low, mellow, layered electronic arrangement before it bursts into a bright and ethereal groove. Lia’s vocals are the star of the show, effortlessly lovable and darkly seductive. It’s a perfect slice of stormy yet romantic R&B.

Track two Stars Are Aligning feels laidback yet pensive. Complementary layers of vocals set the scene early on before becoming more concrete during a staccato verse. The bass stays heavy, grounding the otherwise astral feel of the instrumentals.

Another Lover has a dance beat that will get you moving. The vocals remain delicately heart-breaking though and there is a feeling of defiance in the lyrics, particularly during a chanting, self-reinforcing chorus. A tropical outro is full of vivid imagery. It’s a highlight.

Rhythm brings the EP to a close. It’s here that Lia really wears her heart on her sleeve and there’s an arresting vulnerability in her voice and words. A soaring chorus grabs you by the hand and tells you it’s all going to be OK, and Lia is speaking to herself just as much as the audience.

I loved Good Boy when I first heard it, so it’s so great to hear more from Lia. It’s even better to hear so many more facets to her sound, and to learn so much about her inner workings. If you’re just coming to her music now, this EP works as a wonderful introduction. Soul Scapes, released via Anxious Gems is out now and you can check it out below.
