What You Need It For is a single released by New Delhi, India-based alternative rock act ioish back in September, though it’s only just hit my radar. Ioish is the project of Vaibhav Bhutani and has been going for over ten years.

What You Need It For is an instrumental track, but it’s interesting and complex arrangement says more than a lot of others with lyrics. A slow-burner, an electronic intro gives way to a melodic, math rock middle. It’s melancholy will tug at your heart strings while the horns, coming courtesy of Meredith Moore, elevates it all.

The track features on ioish’s album In Waves, a theatrical collection that features some of Vaibhav’s most admired musicians. Alongside Meredith, this track also features Nikhail Rufus Raj on bass, Saksham Gupta on guitar, and Shantanu Sudarshan on drums.

It might have taken awhile for ioish to come to my attention but now that they have, they won’t be far from it. What You Need It For is a wonderful introduction to their sound. You can check it out below.
