Ocna are an indie rock four-piece based in Brighton who are fairly new to the scene. They released two singles last year – Can’t and When – and received a warm reception. Yet, it’s their newest single that has got them on my radar. A track full of dichotomies, it’s called Because.

Because is instantly gripping, mixing dreamy etherealness with Gothic vibes and earthy rock elements. The track is all about contrasts and that’s what you get from its composition, and its lyrics that speak of light and dark, and pleasure and pain. Its message through it all is that sometimes you have to accept that something has happened “just because”.
Ocna are Fiona Robertson on vocals, Karl Nilssen on electronics, programming, guitar and lap steel, Matt Burns on drums, and Dale Hudson on guitar, bass and synths. They formed in 2019, influenced by likes of School of Seven Bells, Big Thief, and Joy Division. Fans of any of those acts will find a lot to love about Because. You can check it out below.
