Discovery: Synecdoche Montauk

Synecdoche Montauk is a London-based Avant Garde artist who has just returned from a multi-year hiatus. His new single KG opens his upcoming album Acume and also acts as an introduction to his work for us.

By Graeme Smith

KG blends pop, R&B and experimentation to create something wonderfully cinematic and atmospheric. Rumbling bass and soulful vocals set the early tone, punctuated with stings of strings, before we get a more complex electronic arrangement that is rich with emotional textures.

Though now based in London, Synecdoche was born in Moscow, and has been creating music in the Russian language for ten years. Acume, which is also out now, is a collection that reflects on Russia’s place in the modern world, written just before the war in Ukraine. Its name is a combination of the Italian word acumen (in English “discernment”) and the Romanian word acum (in English “now”).
