Dubh (pronounced “dove”) Lee is a Dublin, Ireland-based alternative folk singer songwriter who has just hit my radar thanks to her hard-hitting new track and video. It’s called Holly Would.
By Graeme Smith
Holly Would is a song that explores domestic abuse and the patriarchy. Lyrically, then, it’s not for the faint-hearted but its message is important, and told through Dubh’s lived experience growing up as a woman in Ireland. Musically, it’s traditional folk with a modern edge, based on acoustic guitar and piano.
The track is taken from Dubh’s upcoming debut EP Animals and Friends which is set for release on 28 April. Holly Would is such a striking introduction to her music for us. You can watch its stunningly tense video below.
