Interview: Luna Waves

Luna Waves is the main project of Bedford-based multi-instrumentalist Rob Muir. Despite working on his own, his music has a fantastically full sound, branching across a range of different genres. Blood Moon is a top notch tune, creating catchy guitar melodies that should captivate anyone into their electro or rock. Find out more about Luna Waves here…

You released a single titled Blood Moon. What can you tell us about the track?

Blood Moon is the title track taken from my second album Blood Moon, which was released on 27th March 2022. It’s basically a song that touches upon the feeling of uncertainty and impending doom that was brought on during the height of the pandemic.

How has the reception to Blood Moon been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

Blood Moon seemed to be the track from my second album that resonated with listeners the most. I didn’t release any official singles from the album as it contains 16 tracks and was intended to be listened to a a whole piece. However, if I was going to release a single from the album, Blood Moon would be it. The album and individual tracks are available on all streaming services and available for purchase via Bandcamp here: lunawavesmusic.b…d-moon

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

I released my 3rd album Bruised Gold in November 2022 – again without singles, but I am currently working on my fourth album, provisionally titled Hourglass, and I am planning to release a single from that album in 2023.

Are there any plans to release a full-length album or an EP?

I put out two full length albums in 2022, Blood Moon in March and Bruised Gold in November. I am currently working on my fourth album and a more stripped back acoustic EP.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?

Luna Waves is largely a recording project, so I am focusing all my attention on the studio.

Luna Waves is a project created by yourself, Rob Muir. Why did you decide to create music under that name instead of as a solo project?

I think having an alias allows me to play in any style and indulge any whims that I might have – I like the freedom and creativity that allows. I didn’t want to treat my music as a singer-songwriter project under my own name for fear of boxing myself in. I find myself getting bored easily if I stick to a specific style or genre and pretty much all of my favourite artists and biggest inspirations have wildly different albums within their catalogue, or even different songs/flavours within one album.

Your music has a definitive electro-rock sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I definitely grew up listening to all kinds of rock music and I am definitely a 90’s grunge kid, so I am indebted to the likes of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and The Smashing Pumpkins, but my music never really goes all that heavy/grungy. Over the last few years I have been heavily influenced by a lot of psychedelic rock and dream pop – artists like Tame Impala, Melody’s Echo Chamber and Beach House. Lately I have been listening to a lot of Beabadoobee, Paramore and Boygenius, who are all amazing! I think female artists are the ones making the most interesting music at the moment, I think they seem to have a lot more to say and have better singers than a lot of male fronted bands.

You’re from Bedford. How is the local music scene faring at the moment?

There is a pretty healthy music scene in Bedford and we are very lucky to still have a thriving independent music venue in Esquires. I don’t really play live as Luna Waves, so I am a little out of touch with the local scene, but it seems in pretty good shape to me.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

As above, I don’t really play live as Luna Waves. At the moment it is more of a studio project and acts as a creative outlet for me. I have thought about building a live band around Luna Waves, so maybe in the future.

Any last words for the fans?

Please keep supporting me and my music. Even the smallest support/encouragement goes a long way for unsigned artists like me. Cheers!
