Discovery: Monagi

Monagi is a Ghent, Belguim-based alternative pop group who have just come to my attention thanks to their new tale of toxic love. It’s called Amour, amour.

By Graeme Smith

Amour, amour is the story of two narcissistic lovers, and it’s part autobiographical for Monagi’s singer and songwriter, Jess Jacob. It’s a subject often covered by modern music, but not in the way that Monagi do. Their moody, percussive arrangement is wonderfully atmospheric and the track’s vocal textures are utterly mesmerising. The lyrics are in French, but the emotion is universal.

Jess was born in Brussels and raised on a diet of Serge Gainsboug and David Bowie. Fans of those artists will find a lot to love about the Monagi sound. Production and engineering for Amour, amour comes from Jolan Decaestecker. You can listen to the single below.
