New Music: Fold – The Painful Truth

Leeds-based nu jazz collective Fold have featured on our blog a couple of times before, but not since the autumn of last year. Their latest sees them team up with another York Calling featured artist, saxophonist Emma Johnson. It’s called The Painful Truth.

By Graeme Smith

The Painful Truth opens with the voice of the late author bell hooks and her uncomfortable message about the stifling of dissenting voices is instantly striking. The severity of the message is tempered by bell’s own hopeful assertion that “people are really hungry for truth” and Emma’s bright horn arrangement.

It’s wonderful to have Fold back on the blog and The Painful Truth is their best track yet. You can give it a listen below.
