New Music: The Fades – Off the Record

South London-based garage rock band The Fades have featured a couple of times on this blog before. Early last year, I discovered them through their double-A side Lost My Job and Time Is Right. Then in the Autumn I ran the rule over their album Night Terrors. Now they’re back with a new single called Off the Record.

By Graeme Smith

Off the Record opens with fuzzy, relentless guitar before quick fire vocals come in. There’s a touch of System of the Down about their latest, with a similarly chaotic vibe and a healthy dose of humour in its repeating lyrics. In true punk style, the track comes at you fast, with barely room to breathe, and it’s all over in two and a half minutes.

The Fades are Dave Lightfoot on vocals and guitar, James Lightfoot on bass, Jonny Barnard on guitar and Alastair “Flash” Thorpe on drums. They been performing since 2002, being championed by Zane Lowe and even touring the US.
