New Music: Eleri Ward – Grieving the Future

New York City, USA-based singer songwriter Eleri Ward first hit our radar back in 2021 thanks to her EP Friction. Her brand of experimental pop impressed us so much that we followed it up with a share of her track Perfect last year. Now she’s back again with a new storytelling track. It’s called Grieving the Future.

By Graeme Smith

Eleri has made a name for herself in musical theatre circles doing acoustic covers of the Stephen Sondheim songbook but it’s always been her originals that have caught our attention more. Grieving the Future is no exception, an eloquent meditation on staying present and not getting lost in a fictional future.

The track opens beautifully ambient, giving plenty of space to Eleri’s passionate vocals and her gripping lyrics. As the track progresses we hit a pop groove which makes you want to move without sacrificing any of the emotional gravitas. A textured and stripped-back bridge perfectly sets up a powerful finish.
