Russian artist Juliana Strangelove first came to our attention way back in 2018. Her track Bourbon Street Bar impressed me with its classic rock sound and catchiness. Fast forward to 2023 and she’s making her return thanks to her new melodic rock ballad Dead Poets.
By Graeme Smith
Dead Poets is a slow and simmering rock track. It opens quiet with Juliana’s expressive vocals the star of the show. A slow build takes us to the chorus where the vocals become pleading yet powerful. All the while a bluesy rock arrangement creates an intimate atmosphere. Lyrically it’s stirring, telling a tale of a protagonist who escapes the harshness of the world in literature.
Juliana is originally from Moscow but is currently living in exile in Georgia. She grew up listening to Johnny Cash, The Doors, The Rolling Stones and all things old school rock. Earlier in her career she appeared on The Voice Russia where she stood strong against a homophobic backlash. I’m certainly glad to have her back on this blog. You can give Dead Poets a listen below.
