Ginger Beef are an alternative pop duo based in Calgary, Canada who has just come to my attention thanks to their original take on a prog rock classic. Originally released in 1971 by Dutch band Focus, it’s called Hocus Pocus.
By Graeme Smith
Ginger Beef are Warren Tse (aka MSG) and Jiajia Li. The pair combine Eastern and Western elements, as well as classic and modern ones with their sound. The result is something that feels completely unique, and totally timeless. Jiajia’s classically-trained flute juxtaposes with the jangly rock of MSG’s guitar beautifully.
Those who know the original Hocus Pocus will be pleased by the pair’s reverence to the original. Those who are hearing it for the first time will definitely want to check out Focus’s track after hearing Ginger Beef’s version. You can check out its chaotic video below.
