Discovery: Beware of Trains

Beware of Trains is a chamber pop group based not too far away from here in Hebden Bridge. They’ve just come to my attention thanks to the release of their latest single and take on the festive season. It’s called Forever Home.

By Graeme Smith

Anyone who works in pet adoption will recognise the phrase “forever home”, or the place a shelter animal ends up after being adopted. This was exactly what Beware of Trains had in mind when penning their track of the same name. A wider narrative explores the idea of returning home for the holidays and is told through expressive vocals, twinkling percussion and image-rich lyrics.

Beware of Trains are pianist and singer-songwriter Leighton Jones, Scottish soprano Marie Claire Breen and Leeds Conservatoire multi-instrumentalist Laura McIntosh on bass and keys. It was opera that brought them together and that love of the form percolates into their music.

You can catch Beware of Trains live between 1 and 3 December in Halifax, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Forever Home additionally features Darren Allison and Michael Barkley. It was composed by Leighton Jones, written by Jones and Breen and produced by Jones with Darren Allison. It was recorded at Hebden Bridge Thistle Bottom studios and London Triangle Studios. You can check it out below.
