Magenta Dusk is a Nottingham-based music producer who has just come to my attention with his sound that combines the modern with the retro. His latest single is called Time.
By Graeme Smith
The man behind Magenta Dusk is Ross who brings together pop culture references including Philip K. Dick, Columbo and the ’80s with musical influences that include Elliot Smith and Electric Youth. Working remotely with vocalists, he creates a sound that’s pop but not as we know it.
Time explores out relationship with life, burning through our precious time while waiting for something in the distance or spending our days living in the past. It’s beautifully articulated through a rich and moody synth arrangement and punchy percussion. What captivated me most, though, was its thoughtful lyrics, beautifully delivered by delicate vocals.
The single is taken from Magenta Dusk’s upcoming EP Last Light. Ross recorded Time at his home studio, providing all the instrumentals. You can give it a listen below.
