EP Review: Lexi Lemonade – Flavors

Lexi Lemonade is a New Jersey, USA-based singer songwriter who first came to our attention in 2021. More recently, I ran the rule over her single Orion, which is included in her debut EP. A five track collection that celebrates an end of an era for her, it’s called Flavors.

Flavors delves into Lexi’s love of tastes as metaphors, capturing the essence of her sound as “a tall glass of strawberry lemonade with a touch of vodka.” The EP comes after a two-year hiatus from music in which she became a mother. To Lexi, it marks the end of an era and the dawn of a new one that celebrates love, heartbreak, self-worth and newfound confidence.

The EP opens with its title track. It’s a moody start with plenty of experimental layers that create an instant atmosphere. Lexi’s love of language is apparent from the first verse with image-laden lyrics delivered through sultry and captivating vocals. It was the track that first made us fall in love with Lexi and is a fitting opening to this debut collection.

The aforementioned Orion comes next, giving us a trip to the cosmos with its airy arrangement. What brings us back to down to earth is the human emotion of its vocals. The melody of its chorus will stick with you. Service is a sensual moment with a strong sense of intimacy. Its empowering lyrics makes it a highlight.

How Could I? has a sense of the cinematic about it with some ghostly ambience and soul-searching lyrics. The isolation of Lexi’s vocals make them all the more striking. Drip closes the EP with a textured and tactile number that has an insatiable groove. It’s a final sting in the tale, showing us the racier side of Lexi’s sound. It’s another highlight.
