EP Review: West Ferry – Sad Regrets Pour On

West Ferry are an indie rock band based in Buffalo, USA who have just hit my radar thanks to their upcoming EP release. Exploring themes of connection and distraction in the modern world, it’s called Sad Regrets Pour On.

By Graeme Smith

Inspired by the likes of Bright Eyes, Manchester Orchestra, PUP and Brand New, West Ferry are made up of guitarist and vocalist Shawn McDonell, bassist Brent Feuz, drummer Joseph Vallone, and guitarist and keyboard player Peter Heuer. They’ve been releasing music since 2015 including a previous EP Out of Reach that came out in 2022.

Their upcoming collection is one that hits hard with relatable lyrics and emotional rock arrangements. It kicks off with Top 3 and you are instantly enticed into their world. A looping, jangly riff starts things off before we get a lively verse with pleading vocals. There’s a rawness about West Ferry’s sound that make them feel authentic.

Wknd is a heavier effort with some raging riffs and striking percussion setting the early tone. Screamed vocals give us a passionate highlight in its verse before arriving at a cathartic, chanting finish.

Together Alone closes the collection with a simmering and reflective number. A slow yet rousing tempo will have you swaying along. It all builds to a big yet melancholic finish where the band leave it all out there.

Although West Ferry’s new EP is only three tracks long, there’s a lot to absorb in it. It’s definitely one to which you will frequently return, pouring over the lyrics time and again. If you’re a fan of emo-infused indie folk and rock then West Ferry are definitely carrying the flame of the genre onwards, and adding their own brand of authenticity to it. Sad Regrets Pour On is a must-listen.

Sad Regrets Pour On is set for release 19 January.
