Album Review: Showtime Ramon – The Abominable Snowman

Sacramento, USA-based Mexican-American rapper Showtime Ramon has gathered together a score of contributors to create a musically diverse new album. It’s called The Abominable Snowman.

By Graeme Smith

Featuring on The Abominable Snowman are Chuuwee, Freetown, Xynfe, and producers Felons201, Zoneto’zen, Slugwurf, Sypooda, Cultxre, The Golden One, prodbyb0nds, Husky Boy and Session600, meaning the album is more of a compilation than a single artist’s collection. Rich with pop culture references and a fresh style, it’s one for lovers of new and retro hip hop alike.

The collection starts with Jack Johnson, a reference to the first black heavyweight boxer. It’s a slow and thoughtful opener, with some beautiful instrumental textures and free-flowing verses. The lyrics are boastful, but the boasting is justified given their astuteness. You can tell straight away that you’re in for something a cut above with this album.

Gods Gift comes with a moody, lo-fi vibe and attitude-laden vocals. Crossface simmers with a dark atmosphere while Mark Henry, a tribute to the world strongest man, Olympian and WWE hall of famer, provides an early highlight through its plentiful references and bombastic style.

Get a Grip bounces along at a laidback pace with some sultry storytelling. DDP, another wrestling reference, this time to Diamond Dallas Page, has some big beats and a groove that will have you nodding along. The inclusion of Freetown makes it another highlight.

JLO has a touch of the throwback about it. Pam Grier, featuring Chuuwee, brings with it some soulful lo-fi. Fastest Whip has ’80s overtones seamlessly mixing with modern rap. Versatile Dynamics closes the album with a beautifully textured highlight. It’s the perfect end to an innovative and accessible collection.
