Scott Clay is a Nashville, USA-based singer songwriter who has just come to my attention through the release of his sixth studio album. Set to drop in May, it’s a delectable mix of ’60s funk, experimental folk, and good old-fashioned Americana. It’s called Jade.
By Graeme Smith
The album has already been teased by its first single release, One for the Road, last month. It’s also the track that opens the album, setting things off on the right foot with its bold composition that brings together layers of plucked strings with emotional vocals. There’s a rawness to Scott’s sound that has you sitting up and listening as he draws you into his world.
From there we get ten more tracks that feel individually unique but collectively cohesive. Whether its through the driving rock of Wildfire, the ponderous organ of Burning For You, the powerful percussion and psychedelic wah-wah of World Gone Crazy, or the cinematic duo of Firefly Lullaby and El Tiempo Dira (Time Will Tell), Scott pushes the envelope without ever making his music inaccessible, and you can tell how finely he’s crafted his sound over six albums.
Next single The Painter proves a highlight. It’s a soaring and introspective folk rock ballad that has a powerful message of self-forgiveness delivered through some vivid imagery. Title track Jade is another. It tells a rich, melancholic and reflective story through its experimental Americana, and has a standout chorus.
I feel I’ve come to Scott Clay a little late, but better that than never. His latest album is a triumph. If you’re a Scott Clay fan, you’re in luck. He’s just commenced a tour here in the UK, kicking off in Kingston upon Thames tonight. For us here in Yorkshire, there’s a stop off at The Underground, Bradford on 2 March.
Jade is set for release 1 May.
