Discovery: Sheila Simmenes

Sheila Simmenes is a Norway-based jazz singer and music producer who has just come to my attention through her reimagining of her 2021 track Same Old Song.

By Graeme Smith

Sheila produces under the name Eloah Blú and has used this vehicle to remix her track that originally appeared on her debut album Love Was Easy. The result is something that feels fresh and cohesive, drawing on her love of Brazilian underground club music, lo-fi and bossa nova.

The new remix is a light and airy affair, with plenty of scene-setting ambience in its intro. Things develop into a laidback bass groove with move-inducing percussion. The shining star is most certainly Sheila’s voice. Beautifully gentle yet rich with expression, her singing will mesmerise you.

Same Old Song features 8-string guitarist Per Olav Kobberstad, and was recorded in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and Kongshavn Studio in Kristiansand, Norway with Bjørn Ole Rasch as producer. You can give it a listen below.
