EP Review: Magenta Dusk – Last Light

Nottingham-based music producer Magenta Dusk, real name Ross, first featured on this blog towards the end of last year with his modern-retro single Time. It’s a track that features on his debut EP, which has been released today.

By Graeme Smith

For his debut EP Last Light, Ross has worked with vocalists from around the world, resulting in a five track collection that gives us plenty of variety. At its heart is his production which brings together elements of modern pop and remnants of yesteryear.

A project that’s as inspired by the novels of Philip K. Dick as much as it is by acts such as M83 and Chvrches, there’s a decidedly otherworldliness about Last Light. From the throbbing ’80s sci-fi soundtrack love song Blinded to the dark and synth-laden meditation on mortality Edgelands, the EP paints a fantastical picture that remains full of very relatable emotion.

Making up the rest of the EP are the driving, nostalgic and upbeat Close To Never, the moody and atmospheric reflection Youth and the aforementioned Time. The latter takes its place in the collection as a vibrant, layered and philosophical highlight.

Though Ross is still setting out on his musical journey as Magenta Dust, having only started the project in 2021 during lockdown, his sound is already showing some sophistication. This debut EP is a line in the sand, a collection that shows the world what he has, and teases us with the potential of where he might take it. He has a sound that will touch fans of the old school and of modern pop, and he has worked with some beautiful voices to complete it.

Last Light was recorded at Ross’s home, working remotely with vocalists based in the US and Europe. The EP is out now via Leafless Tree Records and you can check it out below.
