The Ninth Empire is a Vancouver, Canada-based act who has just come to my attention through the release of their third single. Touching on hard-hitting subjects like communication in relationships and childhood trauma, it’s called Ghosted.

The Ninth Empire is something of a one-man band with recording, mixing and mastering all done DIY. The result is a sound that feels very personal, especially when combined with the narrative of Ghosted. Based on lived experience, it tells the story of a breakup which led to sudden and complete end of the relationship.

Opening gently, the emotion hits you right away in Ghosted. Then, soulful vocals come in, delivering striking lyrics. The picture is complete by a memorable, and soaring chorus, and a rapped second verse.
