Established in 2014, Say Owt are York’s loveable gang of performance poets hosting high-energy nights of words and verse.

Say Owt takes over The Crescent Community Venue twice a year for a raucous night of spoken word and performance poetry in the form of SAY OWT SLAM.

In a slam, poets have three minutes to wow the audience. It’s fast, frantic and fun. Host Henry Raby says: “It’s perfect for people who love poetry, and those who think they hate poetry too.”

Though one poet will be crowned a Say Owt Slam Champion, this isn’t a bitter battle. It’s a celebration as poets bring a variety of styles and forms. Expect tender personal reflections, hilarious laugh-out-loud comedy poems and fiery political tirades.

SHAREEFA ENERGY heads to York

Our special guest poet for this event is the incredible Shareefa Energy!

Shareefa is a poet, writer, activist, educator, creative campaigner, workshop facilitator and arts and wellbeing practitioner of Indian and Muslim heritage from working class Highfields in Leicester. She is the author of poetry collection Galaxy Walk, endorsed by the late Benjamin Zephaniah. Her poetry is raw, honest and consistent against injustice. She was awarded the UK Entertainment Best Poet 2017 Award, a nominee for the Muslim Women Arts & Entertainment Awards 2021 and for the Eastern Eye Arts, Culture & Theatre 2019 award by the Arts Council.
