Riversend are an American indie rock band based in Southampton, New Jersey who have just hit my radar through the release of their self-titled debut album.

“Indie rock” is perhaps a term that doesn’t quite encompass all that Riversend are. Creating a surprisingly rich sound for a duo, the pair span genres on their debut full-length, from Goth to Americana.
We know we’re in for something special right from the first few haunting and echoing bars of album opener Dreaming. A slow, simmering opening gambit, we are instantly gripped by the character and charisma of its vocal harmonies, soaring, pleading chorus, and ponderous guitar solos.
The album’s single Withering follows, giving us a tremendous depth. A tentative, ethereal instrumental arrangement set the tone while its lyrics challenge the listener with uncomfortable, philosophical questions of mortality.
Elsewhere we are treated to five more tracks that are diverse in sound and content while staying assuredly cohesive. Soaring, lively highs (Revolution Is My Name, Phantom) are contrasted by melancholic, introspective lows (Moonlight, When All Is Lost). The album is closed by the expressively macabre Dead & Gone, with its driving blues rock, call and response vocals, and dark tone, it proves to be a final, immersive highlight.
With an original sound and unique point of view, Riversend are a band that simply demand attention, and they’ve certainly got mine from now on. Their self-titled debut gives us stunning vocals, exquisite musicianship, finely-crafted production and heaps of atmosphere. If you’re looking for a record to get lost in today, Riversend is for you.
Riversend are Olivia Horovitz on vocals and Zack Miranowic on guitar, bass and vocals. Their debut album Riversend is out now via Man-Child Records and can be purchased as a digital album (with two bonus tracks) via the band’s Bandcamp page. You can also check it out below.
