I’m always on the lookout for music that transcends genre, so when the debut single from Cambridge-based trio LAY / BYE came my way, I knew I had to give it a listen and share. It’s called ACTIVE!

LAY / BYE are singer James McGonigle, guitarist Christy Hoyles, and drummer Alex Brown. Together the trio create a mix of rock and pop that feels both familiar and unexpected at the same time, with their debut single ACTIVE! being the perfect case in point.

There’s a raw punk edge to its atmospheric intro before the track launches into the kind of heavy groove that fans of Royal Blood are going to dig. Passionate, charismatic vocals deliver lyrics that tell the story of egotistical friendships, and a catchy chorus seals the deal. Based on this debut, LAY / BYE are definite ones to watch.

ACTIVE! was mastered by Grammy nominated Robin Schmidt and was recorded and mixed by Matt Turner of Fifths Studio. It’s out now via Clean Records and you can give it a listen below.
