Midnight Prisms is a Los Angeles-based act created by singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vinyl DJ Alicia Beck. She has just released her new EP and tale of self-discovery New Age Disco.

Alicia is an artist heavily influenced by the ’80s but her new EP has something of a ’70s vibe to it, diving headfirst into the reborn genre of disco. It feels, perhaps, the best soundscape for her story of love and personal growth, meaning we have plenty to dance to while we feel the emotion of her lyrics.
The EP opens with Spin Me Again and we are immediately enticed to move by an electro-pop groove. The track takes its time warming us up before Alicia’s soft yet passionate vocals come in. The lyrics are beautifully rich with imagery and its chorus encourages us to leave it all out on the dancefloor.
Title track New Age Disco is an instant earworm and Alicia’s vocals take on a particular soaring quality during its memorable chorus. Spoken word verses give a nice sense of contrast. Strangers slows things down for a romantic ballad before Inside Job gets metaphysical with its driving, moody dance number.
Alicia saves the best for last with Diving In. In it, she explores her journey to embracing her queerness, touching on the challenges and joy that it has brought her. It opens slow burning before finding a twinkling, head-nodding stride. Plenty of space is given to the vocals and their lyrics. Alicia opens up in the verse before the track arrives at a dreamy, cathartic chorus.
Midnight Prisms’ new EP is a vibrant and infectious collection that brims with a sense of authenticity. It burns with emotion while giving us some timeless instrumental arrangements. Alicia’s vocals and vulnerable lyrics hold it all together as we invited to dance and feel in equal measure. It’s a must listen.
