Brian Eno in Heaven is New York, USA-based John Beckman’s latest Mortal Prophets release and once again shows us a different side of his sound.
By Graeme Smith
Mortal Prophets has only been appearing on this blog since last year but we’ve already shared three albums and one EP from him. John’s music is as prolific as it is diverse, it seems, and I’m so glad to be running the rule over his latest.
Always attempting to reinvent himself, we’re never really sure what we’re going to get next from him. Brian Eno In Heaven takes things in a cinematic direction, with nods to the legendary, titular composer as well as plenty of John’s own unique contributions, creating something quite unlike anything else you’ll hear. Thematically, we get tales of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, magical versions of reality and mystical rituals.
The EP consists of five tracks that lead us through an often haunting and always vibrant soundscape before arriving at its title track. It starts with the contemplative, lonely notes of Drowned Lands before Mesmer On Holiday introduces a sense of mystery with its probing, looping melody. Swimming With Witches is brooding and severe while Fraulein Anna Sprengel is vibrant with some percussive mysticism.
John leaves the best for last with the standout Brian Eno In Heaven. It closes the EP with a gentle and reflective moment that’s rich with teasing electronic layers that linger long after the track has finished.
I’ve made no disguise of my love for the music of Mortal Prophets. John Beckman is a true pioneer, unafraid to forge his own path while staying true to the cultural and musical influences that shape him. I don’t know another artist with a wider frame of reference, and the bravery to create the kind of records he is creating.
Brian Eno In Heaven features John Beckman on all music and production. He also created the cover art. Dämmerungschor contribute vocals. The EP was recorded at Lux Astalis, New York, was mixed by Andres Mayo, and was mastered by Martín Muscatello in Dolby Atmos. It’s out now and you can give it a listen below.
