Slap of Reality are a Tampa, Florida, USA-based rock quintet who have just released their first album in decades. It’s called Goodbye, Me.
By Graeme Smith
Featuring Dave Peralta and Joe Kiser on guitar, Rob Sexton on drums, Frank Lacatena on vocals, and Gregg Moore on bass, Slap of Reality have been on the scene since 1988 but haven’t released a full length album since 1996. That has all changed with Goodbye, Me.
With guest appearances from Chris Wollard from Hot Water Music as well as Kevin and Mark from Shades Apart and others, their new album re-announces them with a bang.
We Said opens the album in a frenetic fashion. Big riffs are the order of the day during an intro that gradually sets the scene before gruff, characterful vocals come in. With some great use of harmonies, the urgency kicks up to eleven until we reach a soaring chorus that releases the tension. It’s a strong start.
Days Are Long proves to be another highlight thanks to its visceral lyrics and hopeful tone. Its chorus has an anthemic quality thanks to its layers of vocals and bright, Britpop instrumental. Frank’s vocals are at their most passionate during a gritty verse.
Other highlights include the punchy and rebellious climax of Gaslight, the moodiness of Pete, the wistfulness of 94, and album closer At Your Door. The latter provides a final bright moment that ends things in triumphant style.
You could forgive Slap of Reality for being a little rusty after such a big break between albums, but they’ve lost none of their energy it seems. Their new album revives the raw yet optimistic rock sound of the ’80s and ’90s, bringing it bang up to date for new audiences. Fans of classic rock need to give it a listen.
