Mallow Hill lament love and addiction with soulful new track

American indie pop band Mallow Hill appear on our blog for the first time with their soulful, storytelling track, Smoke.

By Graeme Smith

Hailing from Baltimore, USA, Mallow Hill are named for the street on which the project was conceived. Consisting of Mikayla Joseph on vocals, Danny Gwinn on guitar, Mac Dignam on keys, John Menefee on drums and Chris Reynolds on bass, harmonica and vocals, they are collectively inspired by the likes of Gary Clark Jr, Led Zeppelin and The Black Keys.

Their new single Smoke is about loving someone who is struggling with addiction and substance abuse, a topic that singer Mikayla Joseph has experienced first-hand. She says the track “healed her heart just a little bit.” It opens gently with some soulful indie pop before her compelling vocals arrive, telling an absorbing and image-laden story that draws you in before a powerful chorus brings the emotion.

Smoke was recorded at 3Sirens in Nashville. It was produced, arranged and co-written by Grammy nominated Dex Green who also plays synth, mellotron and organ on the track.

Mallow Hill’s debut album set for release later this year. Smoke is out now and you can check it out below.
