Silsila turn a jam session into eclectic six track EP, Tales of Caution and Wonder.
By Graeme Smith
Silsila are a collaborative collective with a fluid line-up creating RnB, jazz, funk, soul and pop music.
They’ve just come to my attention for the first time through their EP Tales of Caution and Wonder. The collection was born from a session with Darren Eve and Philip Stutely, and features the talents of Kor, MarkDLux and Michael Gerber.
The EP opens with the soulful Lettre. Opening with a meandering bass line, gentle guitar overlays and expressive vocals, we are instantly taken to a place outside of time. Classic jazz combines with something more modern, and lyrically we are treated to plenty of imagery, philosophy and emotion. It’s a strong start.
Grace slows things down and invites us into an intimate scene before becoming bright and lively in the chorus. All Our Lives smoulders with sultriness and has some captivating poetry in its lyrics. This Machine is a dreamy and thoughtful moment full of the promise of a new day. No Story best encapsulates the EP’s title, being full of wonder and experimentation. Split Lips closes things by taking them in an upbeat pop direction. It’s the perfect finish to an eclectic collection that’s full of surprises.
If that wasn’t enough, the EP includes three re-imaginings of its track for good measure.
With their new EP, Silsila mark themselves out as a group of talented musicians with a lot of taste. All six of the record’s tracks are easy to love while also giving us something fresh to sonically digest. It’s the perfect balance of the familiar and challenging, and a must listen for fans of jazz, funk and soul.
