Badsoma showcase their diverse and dreamy sound with debut EP, kicking and screaming.
By Graeme Smith
Formed in September last year, badsoma are a psych-pop project based in Los Angeles, USA consisting of old friends Armin Fard, Starlit Eyes, Donny Segien, Braden Rose, Ana Léon, and Lindsey Hamilton. They’ve just come to my attention for the first time through their debut EP kicking and screaming.
The EP opens with the pensive yet engaging keys of when no one’s around. Gentle, wistful vocals come in, pairing nicely with the cinematic feel of the instrumental as things slowly build to thoughtful close. It leads nicely into the stranger which showcases a livelier side of the band’s sound. A melancholic groove provides the soundtrack for its poetic, captivating lyrics.
Burn out gives us soft and compelling vocals that deliver edgy lyrics. A dreamy yet haunting instrumental gradually builds to a swaying rock arrangement. Talk about me brings a certain indie rock swagger with its bittersweet duet before all i wanted to see closes the EP with mellowness. Storytelling lyrics will have you gripped while the timelessness of its instrumental makes it a final highlight.
Badsoma’s debut EP is a short and sweet five track collection that gives us plenty of musical diversity and an exciting amount of uniqueness. The band have a readily apparent chemistry and aren’t afraid to try something new with their sound. I’m so glad to have been introduced to their work. I can’t wait to hear what they do next!
