Sonny Gullage delivers timeless blues with debut album

Sonny Gullage gives us his unique spin on blues and gospel with stunning debut album, Go Be Free.

By Graeme Smith

With music in his blood, New Orleans, USA-based singer songwriter Sonny Gullage penned his first song at the age of twelve in reaction to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. From there, he hasn’t looked back, and continues to perfect his empathetic, observational blues style. He’s been a contestant on American Idol, and his voice appears on the soundtrack of Disney’s 2019 version of Lady & The Tramp.

His work has culminated with his debut full-length album, Go Be Free, a collection that brings together blues and gospel, all channelled through Sonny’s timeless style. The album opens in a lively fashion through the funky, romantic Just Kiss Me, Baby. The quality of Sonny’s vocals is instantly apparent from the off as they ooze with charisma and swagger. It’s a strong start.

Title track Go Be Free takes things in a philosophical direction without losing any of that lively energy. A stripped-back first verse slowly builds to an anthemic chorus and big finish.

Worried About The Young features guitar by Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram and is a striking highlight thanks to its heartfelt lyrics and delicious blues licks. Other highlights include the vibrant, rousing Things I Can’t Control, the inspirational I’ve Been There, the simmering Hot House, and powerful, slow-building album finale Home to You.

If you’re a fan of modern day blues, you’re going to love Sonny’s new album. He has taken classic influences, his own experience, and a natural flair for song-writing and storytelling to create an accomplished collection with a clear point of view. It’s easy to see why he’s had the success he’s had so far, and I’m sure there will be a lot more in future.

Go Be Free was produced by Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge. It’s out now via Blind Pig Records and you can give it a listen below.
