Chris Bullinger hooks us with storytelling new album

Poet and songwriter Chris Bullinger proves it’s never too late to return to your true calling with new album, Waitin’ To Be Seen.

By Graeme Smith

Based in Nashville, USA, Chris spent over a decade as an entrepreneur in the solar industry, but his true love has always been music and creating. With his new album, Waitin’ To Be Seen, he lets his creatively find the light of day over twelve distinct tracks.

Chris was raised on country music, and we get plenty of traditional folk elements across the album, starting right from the off with contemplative opener One Complete Connection. Its astute lyrics speak of reinvention and connection, and are delivered beautifully through Chris’s laidback vocals.

Each track is connected by theme and by recurring characters. It’s storytelling in the purest sense of the word and it’s clear to see how much effort Chris puts into his lyrics. Musically, it’s as much rock’n’roll as it is folk and we get some punchy moments like Doin’ Bad Good, Darlin’ ‘n’ Me and Up All Night to contrast the gentler, acoustic tracks such as Ain’t Life Grand and Carving Tree. The Way Things Go is of particular note, bringing a bright moment of psych rock to proceedings.

Waitin’ To Be Seen is the kind of album into which you can settle like a well-worn blanket, with a similar warmth about it too. The instrumentals will transport you while the lyrical tales keep you hooked, from the down and out Already Broke right up to album closer Payin’ Dues which ends things well with some sultry blues.

Chris is an artist who wears his influences on his sleeve while giving us plenty of himself through his well-observed lyrics. Lovers of classic rock and country will eat up his latest album.

Waitin’ To Be Seen – Part 1 is out now, with a second part scheduled for future release to complete the 23-track collection. You can give the album a listen below.
