Born in Arkansas, USA and now based in Chicago, Wic Witney is an artist difficult to categorise. He’s a rapper, singer, and songwriter whose music straddles the genres of pop, hip-hop and R&B. Debuting in 2017 with the Tide Pools EP, he’s been steadily growing his audience ever since, scoring plenty of attention through singles like Matcha and Oolong. The buzz was rewarded with a SXSW appearance earlier this year.
His latest EP is called Another Cup and includes six tracks that run the gamut of lively dance numbers and intimate introspection. Wic likens the collection to a cup of tea, and each of its tracks’ titles reflect this from the bubbly Boba to the fiery Elderberry.
Hibiscus gives us some dreamy timelessness, a laidback groove and plenty of pop culture references. Yerba delivers some soulful, nostalgic lo-fi. Ginger brings with it a spicy mix of acoustic and electronic, and showcases Wic’s vocals at their most soulful. Chamomile is suitably chilled while giving us some striking contrast through its rousing, soft rock chorus.
Wic Whitney is an artist who simply confounds expectations. He tears down stereotypes and has plenty to say about the modern world. It’s rare to find an artist this exciting nowadays, especially when there are so many pretenders and trend-followers. Wic stands out, and his new EP is a thoughtful joy.
Another Cup is out now and you can give it a listen below.
