Faroe Islands-based soul pop singer songwriter jazzygold returns to our pages with a deeply personal story of growing up as an outsider.
By Graeme Smith
Real name Jasmine Mote, jazzygold’s music has graced our pages a couple of times before. She is a rare artist, not only coming from the relatively low-key scene of the Faroe Islands, but also one of the few black artists to do so.
Her blackness, and her home life growing up, is what she dwells on with her latest track, homerun. Its lyrics tell the story of being raised in a predominantly white neighbourhood, and questioning her identity, physical characteristics, and family situation. The lyrics are authentically delivered by Jasmine, and backed by woozy, ambient soul pop that’s full of emotion. It might just be her most striking track yet.
Homerun is out now and you can give it a listen below.
