Chell. creates an outlet for childhood trauma for herself and us in her new EP, Wish You Well.
By Graeme Smith
New to our blog, Chell. has just hit our radar thanks to her EP, Wish You Well. The record sees Chell. deal with her childhood trauma and overcome it.
We get that straight away from her raw and striking storytelling in soulful album opener Little Girl. There’s a visceral anger to it all as she questions her upbringing. As the track progresses, the instrumental becomes more stripped-back, giving plenty of space to the emotional quality of Chell.’s voice. It’s a powerful start.
Gods Unfavorite proves an early highlight thanks to its delicate guitar arrangement and melancholic lyrics. We can’t help but feel along as Chell. languishes in her struggle. Hypocrite is an intimate and self-reflective moment. It pours seamlessly into vignette. Who Would I Call? Alive is gentle and ponderous before Wish You Were Here closes the EP in a dreamy fashion. Its brightness nicely contrasts the darkness of the rest of the record, making it another highlight.
With her new EP, Chell. shows just what an incredible singer she is. More than that, we get an insight into her emotional world through astute lyrics that hold nothing back. Together, her voice and her lyrics make her stand out from the crowd. If you’re looking for some catharsis today, give this record a listen.
