Fast becoming one of our favourite artists, Nova Soon returns to our pages with a unique take on the season.

It was earlier this year that the music of Noah de Grunwald, who performs at Nova Soon, came to my attention and became an instant favourite. After sharing tracks from his visceral EP Goodbyetown, it’s time for a bit of a change of pace thanks to his Christmas release.

Cosmos in December keeps things melancholic while turning its attention outward compared to the personal story of his EP. It explores the idea that the true spirit of the season is finding warmth and comfort among others while being aware of our insignificance in the big, cold universe.

There’s an inviting feeling about the track’s composition. At once we are hooked in by harmonies from Katie Arnold before Nova’s expressive lead vocal comes in. They deliver powerful lyrics backed by an acoustic guitar melody. Piano from Dexter Fawcett rounds out the sound nicely while production by Conor Reilly completes the mood.
