Santa Sallet makes his move in the rap game with new album, Plutography.
By Graeme Smith
A rapper, producer, and entrepreneur born in Roseau, Dominica, Santa Sallet has come to our attention for the first time through his new album Plutography, a collection about learning how to succeed in the music industry.
The album brings together a variety of sounds, mixing upbeat bangers with stripped-back hip-hop, Latin flavour and much more. Championship Ring gets things going with a braggadocious rap and from there we get fifteen more tracks, twists and turns.
Old school beats and samples give the album a certain timeless feel, especially during tracks like Bitch I’m Rich, Just Another Tuesday and F*ck With Me (Run With Me). Santa’s lyrics are not for the faint-hearted but there’s enough cleverness to them to temper their edginess. The swagger and charisma of his vocal also helps.
Doing It Well and I Get Money bring with them some moodiness while La Fama bristles with bombast. Ghost is one of two freestyles on the album (the other being Friday Freestyle) and sees Santa’s style at his rawest. Camouflage is a team up with Johnny B and pairs severe beats with cosmic electronica. It’s a highlight.
The album’s final leg gives us the memorable wordplay of Dungeon Dragon, the Franco-Anglaise Repete, the quickfire Listen (Stop), the bass beats of Splash, and percussive album closer Touchdown.
Santa Sallet is doing rap right. He brings plenty of his original style to his timeless tracks, while treating listeners to some delicious wordplay to his boastful way.
