Discovery: The Blanket Forts captivates with innovative album

The project of Conor MacGinnis, The Blanket Forts is new to our blog thanks to his album, My Lucky Sword.

By Graeme Smith

My Lucky Sword nearly didn’t exist. It was written during a low point of Conor’s life in 2023 and for awhile it simply stewed. In 2024, he resolved to finish the project, crafting its final pieces during a trip to Taiwan on his MacBook Air. The result is something startingly original.

Across its seven tracks, he gives us a sound that’s quite unlike anything I’ve heard before. At once, it’s edgy and experimental while also being acoustic and inviting. Hold On, Lucky Boy!! gets things going in a haunting and emotional way and from there were are kept guessing what will come next.

Brand New shimmers with an electronic groove and some surprise samples while I Made The Waves My Enemy is delicate and full of longing. Alone Here sparkles with ambient textures and Eastern elements. ☯︎♀☽◯☾♀☯︎ provides a peaceful interlude before lead single To Feel A Ghost Again devastates with its honest lyrics. Title track My Lucky Sword closes the album in a lively and cinematic fashion.

It’s often the case that the most innovative artists are also the most reluctant to share their art. In the case of The Blanket Forts, I’m glad that he did. His new album is one I feel I’m going to return to many times – it’s such a vibrant and captivating listen!

My Lucky Sword is out now, available to buy on a pay what you feel basis on Bandcamp. You can check it out below.
