Based in Washington DC, USA, Ubiquity Machine are the genre-hopping duo of The Rabbit and Howard Rabach. They’ve just come to my attention through their new EP release, Romeo and Juliet.
By Graeme Smith
As well as being a release in its own right, Romeo and Juliet is the first half of their second album, set to be released later in 2025. The sampler gives us a good taste of what’s to come from the album, giving us five distinct and compelling tracks.
Opening the record is its title track. Vibrant with electronic indie pop elements, its lyrics tell an unconventional love story which is full of relatable sentiments and a certain quirkiness. It’s probably one of the most memorable tracks I’ve heard for a while, and sets things up nicely for what’s to come.
Betty and Steve takes things into a classic rock direction, blending big riffs, simmering organ and folksy storytelling. A bass groove keeps things moving before the track gets big in its chorus. I Think It’s Funny slows the tempo and introduces a touch of the blues before Met a Boy shows us the darker side of love with a Radiohead-esque number. Losing Your Mind closes the EP in funky, biting style.
I’m very excited by what Ubiquity Machine are doing. They’re not afraid to blur genre lines while giving us plenty to ruminate over in their lyrics.
