Tiny Cities are the New Jersey, USA-based singer songwriter duo of Melissa Anthony and Dennis King (who also performs as SONOFDOV, a name you might find familiar if you follow our blog).
By Graeme Smith
Their new EP, The Wind Can Be So Cruel, was born out of the single, Hologram, penned by Melissa. It opens the record in contemplative style. Finger-picked guitar sets the tone before her mournful vocal comes in, equal parts enchanting and haunting. The imagery in its lyrics will transport you.
Red Flag Warning sees Dennis take the lead with the vocal during a raw and visceral moment that’s full of melancholy. When Melissa’s voice come in, the pair work beautifully together.
It didn’t seem possible, but Should Have Known Better strips things back further, giving us a raw and intimate highlight in which wistful guitar swirls among atmospheric chords and minimal percussion.
Something In The Wind then closes the EP on a slightly brighter note, opening slow and thoughtful before growing in stature with a sense of hope. Compared to the previous three tracks, it’s positively rousing, providing the perfect tonic to any January blues.
Dennis is proving to be something of a master of collaboration. We’ve previously shared his split EP with Renee Maskin which proved a captivating treat. I think this team up with Melissa Anthony might have just topped it. The chemistry between the two is palpable across each of its four tracks, and the fact that they share the limelight is a well-executed balancing act.
If you’re looking for a record to soundtrack your winter then this EP is it. I’ll be waiting with baited breath for new releases from both these artists.
