Discovery: Scott Mathews and The Good Folk debuts with weighty yet rousing album

An Americana and folk multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Delaware, USA, Scott Mathews and The Good Folk went solo in 2020 after years of performing with some of Delaware’s best musicians.

He’s new to our blog courtesy of his debut solo album, Based on a True Story. Produced with Ritchie Rubini, the album tackles weighty topics including facing our demons, confronting failure, and acknowledging our own mortality.

It opens with River Bend and we are at once transported to a rural world in which nature reflects emotion. Scott’s vocals are the highlight, subtle and expressive, especially during a stirring chorus. The instrumental then builds to a beautifully rousing crescendo and we’re hooked.

When It’s My Time ups the tempo during an uproarious and philosophical number. Northern State keeps things lively with some cantering folk. Friend in Provo proves a mid-album highlight thanks to its dark storytelling and mournful strings.

The album is then rounded off by a trio of seasonal tracks. Endless Summer and Last Sunflower of Summer give us contrasting views of high season, with the former being soulful rock and the latter, gentle, reflective Americana. Merry Folkin’ Christmas then gives us the reality of the festive period with some singalong country.

Scott Mathews’ debut in an accomplished one, giving us an array of emotions and styles. He’s not afraid to tackle the big questions across its seven immersive tracks.

Based on a True Story features Laura Beth Jewell on fiddle, Michael McCartney on organ and keys, Aaron Alexander on guitar, Ritchie Rubini on drums and percussion, and Tim Hein, Jason Webb & Meghan Julia on backing vocals. It’s out now and you can give it a listen below.
