Co-writer for the indie band The Toxhards, London-based Beverly Hell has come to our attention through her solo project and its experimental pop debut track, Clover.

Clover is a track that takes its time to develop, opening stripped-back yet textured before expressive vocals come in. They deliver lyrics that are full of longing as things gradually build to a cinematic chorus. Finally, a pacy, percussive beat drops and the track fully reveals itself as a poetic, dramatic, experimental wonder.

Lyrically, the track explores love’s precarious nature, dwelling on the emotion’s dark side and how a relationship won’t always work out. Like Joan Jett and Erykah Badu before her, Beverly Hell uses the four-leaf clover as her muse, and throws in some subtle references to both artists while she’s at it. “I couldn’t resist,” she says.

There’s plenty more to come from Beverly Hell this year, with five more singles planned. I’m certainly glad to be making her acquaintance, and will be keeping a close eye out for her future releases. She’s bringing something fresh and interesting to the world of pop, and we’re crying out for more of that.

Clover is out now and you can give it a listen below.
