Discovery: EM_LEN updates ’80s alternative in new album

Inspired by the likes of The Cure, OMD and Depeche Mode, Sleep Infinity is the imaginative new album from EM_LEN.

By Graeme Smith

With his new album, EM_LEN wears his influences on his sleeve while also adding something new to the synthpop, post-punk and shoegaze genres. Venture Meditation (in a world of likes) introduces the sound through a composition that alternates between driving electronica and dreamy interludes. Lyrically it explores the creeping influence that the digital world has on our lives.

From there we are treated to seven more nuanced and expansive tracks. Short Story gives us plenty of percussive moodiness while Glow introduces some bright romanticism. Happy will have you swaying along. Amusements hits hard with some severe electronica. New Normal slows things down for a captivating moment before title track Sleep Infinity provides a beautifully textured highlight. Alchemy, then Ritual closes the album in slow-burning style.

If you’re into the alternative new wave acts of the ’80s then you’re going to love how EM_LEN has taken their sound and updated it for the digital age. His new album is an engrossing listen with a unique point of view.

Sleep Infinity is out now, available to buy as a digital album on Bandcamp. You can give it a listen below.
