Miller and Badger’s album started out as an impromptu jazz session. Pianist, composer and producer Miller found an unmistakable chemistry with drummer and songwriter Badger, so much so that they set about putting their music to record. Bringing in the talents of Nirvana and David Byrne cellist Lori Goldston, and flugelhorn player and mixer Eric Padget, the pair created something that makes one sit up to listen.
Across nine tightly-composed tracks, we get a mix of the classical and the modern. There’s a timeless warmth to it all, introduced brightly by the adventurous Voyage, and rounded off nicely by the peaceful Ease.
In between, we get the drama of Horizon Bound in which Golston’s cello provides a mournful thread, the vibrant highlight of Sunglint, and the gentle reflections of Blue Hour. Hypnagogia is hypnotic. Current brings Badger’s drumming to the fore during a driving moment. Wavering Reflection captivates with its nostalgic melody. Foghorn brings the whole quartet together for a stirring composition that is another highlight.
Sam Miller and Matt Badger have created jazz magic with their succinct new album. It’ll make you rethink the genre.
Recorded in a single weekend at Psychoacoustics Recreational Lab, Seattle, Shiprock is out now, available to buy as a digital album on Bandcamp. You can give it a listen below.
