Is glam rock on the comeback? Based on some recent listens, it seems to be. The latest comes from Adam + Attack By Fire.
By Graeme Smith
A genre perhaps thought of as stuffy or old-fashioned, or perhaps even sacred, modern artists are dipping their toes back into it. Djo’s Gap Tooth Smile is a recent example, Adam + Attack By Fire’s Song For Georgia is the latest.
Song For Georgia has the kind of offbeat rock sound that you’d expect from David Bowie. It’s rich with poetic, psychedelic lyrics charismatically delivered as always by Adam Tarsitano’s vocals. They trade blows with edgy guitar in a cantering verse before things hit a hedonistic high in the chorus. Lyrically, the track tells the story of a fictional character that was inspired by real people and experiences. Originally written as a piano ballad, it quickly morphed into the rock and roll number we hear today.
The track was written, performed, recorded and produced solely by Apex, USA-based Tarsitano, the creative force behind Adam + Attack By Fire. Tarsitano is an artist who happily jumps from genre to genre so it’s certainly not ‘typical’ of his sound, if such a word can even be used to describe his music.
He first hit our radar in November 2024 through his true crime inspired track Chateau Clink. I mentioned Bowie then, so there’s certainly a bit of read through, if only subtle. We’ve followed that up with shares of the folksy, timeless and cathartic Rhythm That Was which I described at the time as “blending old-fashioned song writing with modern edge,” the spontaneous and storytelling retro pop of Freight Train and Thunder which made a nod to The Beatles, and the ’80s synth-filled All Good Hair Bands which delighted with its bright instrumental and dark undertone, speaking of being nonchalant to world-changing events.
If Adam + Attack by Fire is currently part of a glam rock revival, I doubt he will be for long. Who knows what we’ll hear from him next – opera? Heavy metal? The joy is that he keeps us guessing with each new release. I can’t wait to hear what he comes up with next!
Until then, let’s enjoy the timeless swagger of Song For Georgia. I, for one, really dig its sound so I hope he retains some of what makes it special in future releases.
