Discovery: Jae.ci captivates with personal and poignant debut album

Full name Jillian “Jae” Carelli, Jae.ci is a songwriter and lyric soprano who has captivated us with their standout debut album, American Doll.

By Graeme Smith

American Doll is a collection that’s theatrical, dramatic and full of relatable storytelling. Jae.ci’s tales carry a striking poignancy while their expressive vocals prove intoxicating – a centrepiece to rich compositions that combine classical elements with modern pop and jazz.

Lyrically the album is dense, demanding multiple listens to unpick its rich narratives and ultimately rewarding those who do make the time for it. Across its seven tracks, Jae.ci explores transracial and international adoption, a subject close to her heart.

“I attended the Korean Adoptee/Adoptive Family Network Conference with my sister in 2023, and we attended a session that explored the seven core issues of adoption,” says Carelli. “I recognised these issues had a significant impact on my life experiences, and used the theme to shape the concept of my album — especially since the four existing songs already resonated with those themes.”

Those themes are loss, loyalty, control, identity, abandonment, trust, and shame. Each is given its moment on American Doll. While each holds an important place in the album’s story, there are some highlights. Title track American Doll is an edgy, animated and attitude-filled number, raging against the weight of expectations. Blood in the Water shows a softer side of the familial bond. Electric Connection is a rumbling, rousing finale that’s full of metaphor.

American Doll is out now and you can give it a listen below.
