What do you get when you combine Nordic psych folk with the traditional rhythms of Burkina Faso? Well, it sounds something like Stockholm-Ouagadougou, the new album by Siri Karlsson & Solo Dja Kabaco.

A combination of the sounds of Sweden and Burkina Faso, Stockholm-Ouagadougou feels at once traditional yet unique. It has a rich sonic palate to draw from, and does so fully. There are, of course, percussive grooves, and they’re joined by delicious strings, elements of Spaghetti Western, and charming vocalisations. There are surprises around every sonic corner, with the groundwork laid for this in opener Hey Solo, which evolves pleasantly over five and a half minutes.

As the album progresses, you come to learn just what an intoxicating mix it is that Karlsson and Kabaco have created. A lively opening gives way to some more contemplative moments in So Lost and San Fina. We get plenty of folksiness, particularly in moments like Téré Ré Na Bo, a soulful highlight. Oh Ma’ takes things a cosmic and psychedelic direction. Let’s Go finishes the album in bombastic style, throwing off any trepidation with some groovy jazz folk.

Stockholm-Ouagadougou is an album like no other, and a must-listen if you want to go on a musical journey. Karlsson and Kabaco make for a winning pair with their combined skills and charm.
