Discovery: the fresh-faced Balter are ones to watch

Fresh from sitting their GCSEs, Balter are a group of four exciting up-and-comers from Northampton who have just released their debut EP, someday.

By Graeme Smith

In their debut EP, Balter offer gentle yet lively rock that at once feels accessible and offbeat. Tom Drury’s vocals combine a certain melancholy with plenty of charm as they deliver lyrics that are reassuringly philosophical. An infectious brightness is infused in every note.

After someone new starts things off, used to be proves wistful while staying hip-shakingly groovy. The lyrics speak of heartache and longing. The emotion stays high throughout while the instrumentals give us various shades of soft indie rock. Know it all is a memorable highlight, complete with a brassy solo before title track someday closes things in dreamy, catchy style.

Balter are Tom Drury on vocals and guitar, Jake Lewis on guitar, Liam Kay on bass, and Jack Cox on drums. For a group still in their teens, they deliver a distinctly mature sound, all while capturing the highs and lows of being young. They’re the definition of ones to watch and if you fancy catching them live, they have shows coming up across the summer, including a support slot for Ocean Colour Scene at Delepre Abbey on 12 July 2025.

Someday is out now and you can give it a listen below.
