Exploring identity, digital fragility, and the emotional dissonance of existing without a physical body, body.404 is the stirring new concept EP from Ukraine-born producer and visual artist Darynka.
By Graeme Smith
The EP opens with the edgy, electronic hyperpop of Uploaded body. It’s rich with poetry and philosophy as it takes on the idea of transcending physical form and existing in a purely digital space. Characterful vocals keep things human, glitchy but nonetheless organic and personable.
Extended body expands the story further through a stripped-back but texturally complicated arrangement that proves hypnotic. Real body brings with it some heavy bass mixed with classical strings, groovy percussion and wistful lyrics before Sensual body ends things with a lo-fi moment that gives us some intimacy. There’s a deconstructed dance feel to it that makes it a final highlight.
I love the concept of body.404 which feels less like an EP and more of an existential art project. It raises some important philosophical questions in a world which is becoming increasingly reliant on digital services such as the Internet and Artificial Intelligence. On the record, what it means to be human and inhuman is blurred, confronting society and delighting us all at once.
