Fast becoming a favourite of ours, Dutch/Surinamese singer-songwriter néomí is back with a mournful new single called Trigger.
By Graeme Smith
There’s a sense of intimacy in Trigger that instantly draws you in. An acoustic guitar-filled intro gives way to néomí’s delicate vocals into the first verse. The lyrics, about the quiet devastation of loving someone you know you can’t keep, are full of introspection and emotion in a stirring chorus and things build to a cinematic crescendo that will stay with you. It all has a Joni Mitchell-esque quality to it.
“The song is so real and painful I don’t think it needs a lot of explaining,” says néomí. “It’s about being deeply in love with someone you know it will not work with. You’ve never felt like you really want to hold on, but you know either way it’s going to hurt – staying or leaving, preparing your heart for the inevitable hurt and difficulties that come with that.”
The single is part of her upcoming EP Another Year Will Pass, set for release 31 October 2025 via Nettwerk.
If you want to catch néomí live, she’ll be coming to Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds on 28 September 2025.
